Description
This topic provides a tutorial on Power Factor Correction topologies and control techniques which, while including a basic introduction to the subject, assumes that attendees will have a general understanding of the need and approach to active PFC. The various topologies applicable to PFC will be described and compared, but the focus will quickly be directed to the boost topology where both fixed-frequency average current-mode and transition (or critical) conduction modes of control will be described and discussed in depth. To illustrate the advantages and disadvantages of each topology, design examples of each will be presented with trade-offs discussed to provide insight and aid in the selection of the most appropriate approach for given system requirements.
