Interleaving Contributes Unique Benefits for Forward and Flyback Converters

Description
Using an interleaved topology to reduce the size and cost of power filtering components, as well as to enhance dynamic load response, will be illustrated with a 200-Watt interleaved forward converter example, which will be described with a thorough design review.

This converter operates from a standard 48 volt telecom input voltage and generates 12 V at 200 W in a half-brick footprint. Over 90% efficiency is achievable in this design without the use of synchronous rectifiers, and with a switching frequency of 500kHz per phase. An interleaved flyback converter with an isolated regulated output voltage will also be discussed, which has the potential for operation over the universal AC line voltage range, and the added benefit of achieving a high power-factor input current characteristic without the need for added PFC circuitry.
