An Interleaved PFC Pre-regulator for High-Power Converters

Description
In higher power applications, full utilization of line power typically requires high power factor. However, simple passive solutions for Power Factor Correction (PFC) require bulky inductors and capacitors, and while active solutions can achieve higher power densities, further gains result from interleaving the PFC power stages. These benefits can yield smaller inductors, reduced current in the boost capacitor, and a reduced need for EMI filtering. This topic will use a 350W design example to illustrate the quantitative principles and performance benefits achievable through interleaving.

PRESENTER
Michael O'Loughlin – Michael has been working with TI/Unitrode since January of 1993 and presently is working as an Applications Engineer for the Power Supply Control Products group in Manchester, NH. He specializes in off line and isolated power supply design. Michael has authored numerous articles on power factor correction and power supply design related topics for such publications as ED, EDN and Power Electronics Technology. He received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Massachusetts.
