7.2 AC-to-Processor: Powering Tomorrow’s Data Centers with TI GaN

This demo shows how to use GaN to achieve 3x power density from in a 1 kW AC input all the way to every point of load. There are three stages in this demo. A 99% efficiency PFC,  a 97.5% efficiency LLC,  and a 91% efficiency 48V to Point of Load converter. Every board uses a Gallium Nitride (GaN) power stage which integrates a GaNFET, driver, and protection for highest performance. The PFC stage is totem-pole topology with our LMG3410 GaN to achieve 156W/in3. Today’s solutions are approximately 55W/in3. The LLC design has 1 MHz switching frequency and an integrated transformer. The power density for this stage is 140W/in3. This is over 1.5X of today’s solutions. Finally we use a single-stage 48:POL architecture based on the LMG5200 and achieve 160W/in3. Today’s solutions have multiple stages and 40W/in3.
