This training outlines the system requirements for EMC immunity, EMI and isolation when designing a variable-speed drive. A brief overview is given on the corresponding IEC standards with the test requirements and pass criterion. Subsystem hardware design examples are shown leveraging TI reference designs for an interface to absolute digital encoders and dual port Gigabit Ethernet to pass EMC immunity and EMI, and a 3-phase inverter with reinforced isolated IGBT gate drivers to meet isolation and common mode transient immunity. For each, the system test requirements will be translated to corresponding IC datasheet parameters. Tips and tricks throughout the presentation help to select the optimum ICs.
