5.5 Improve your isolation design's reliability, robustness and performance by upgrading from optocouplers to digital isolators

Description

November 5, 2020

Industrial TI Tech Days session

Semiconductor isolation technological innovation has opened the door for modern alternatives to optocouplers that offer similar functionality with improved overall performance. Compared to optocouplers, TI’s silicon dioxide (SiO2) digital isolation technology offers superior performance, especially when comparing high voltage ratings, electrical characteristics, switching characteristics, and reliability. This presentation will demonstrate some key shortcomings of optocouplers and compare how digital isolators can be used to reliably achieve better performance. Key comparison topics discussed in this presentation include current/voltage input types, switching performance & power consumption, CMTI, noise immunity (EMC), and isolation of various communications interfaces such as RS-485, CAN, industrial digital inputs, UART, SPI, and I2C.
