Kick to Open Reference Designs

A brief overview of two automotive kick-to-open designs.  TIDA-01409 uses capacitive sensing to detect a gesture.  TIDA-01424 uses ultrasonic sensing to detect a gesture.  Both designs use automotive-grade components and are implemented as simple two-layer boards which interface with low-cost microcontrollers.  The overview includes the design requirements and block diagrams for each solution.  We also discuss the test methods and test results which demonstrate performance for both sensing methods.  These tests include the response to repetitive kicking gestures under various conditions, such as different shoe materials, varying the distance from the sensors, and the impact of environmental conditions.+
