In this lecture, we will learn:
  • Electrolytic capacitors provide huge energy storage density.
  • Their large equivalent series resistance (ESR) and equivalent series inductance (ESL) limits them to low-frequency use.
  • Electrolytics use a liquid electrolyte that is often a point of failure.
  • Tantalum can be used with solid electrolytes, but its status as a conflict mineral and the quality of ceramics have largely displaced it.
