Spin Brushless-DC Motors with the DRV10974
[TEXAS INSTRUMENTS JINGLE] Hello. In this video, I will illustrate how to quickly spin your brushed DC or BLDC motor using Texas Instruments' new DRV10974 evaluation module. The DRV10974 is a fully integrated three-phase brushless DC motor driver that uses TI's proprietary through 180 degrees sensorless algorithm. This enables customers to design a low-noise and highly efficient motor system with minimal external components and to create a more robust and compact board. Now that we understand a bit more about the DRV10974, let's get started. Connect the power supply to the EVM by attaching a ground wire to the test points labeled GND and apply a voltage output between 4.4 volts to 18 volts to the test point labeled Power In. Make sure the current of your supply is set to 1.5 amps, and make sure the switch S1 is in the off position. Next, let's power up the board and turn S1 to the on position. The motor should start spinning. The motor speed can be controlled either by changing the analog voltage through changing the potentiometer or configuring the shunts on the J3 header and applying PWM them signal to the PWM In test point. Some motors require additional configuration to get the motor spinning. One way is to change the current limit resistor on the current limit settings or CS pin to a value lower than 1.5 amps. Additionally, the lead time settings or resistor can be reduced or increased by placing the resistor on the ADV pin. Note that changing the resistor value on the RMP pin will change the acceleration profile of the DRV10974, but the settings should only be changed after the CS and ADV values are selected to get the motor spinning. These resistors can be installed by replacing the 0603 resistors, R2, R3, and R4 for ADV, RMP, and CS, respectively, or installing through-holes resistor into jumpers J8, J9, J10.
