A common method to measure process parameters in plants is based on sound waves. This method is used in: level, flow and displacement field transmitters. It works based on measuring the time of flight (ToF) between when the pulse, generated by a piezo electric crystal, is sent and received back by the piezo. TI offers several innovative solutions to measure this time difference and drive the piezo to transmit the sound wave. Depending on the system, designers can choose among these solutions according to their needs. In this presentation three solutions, based on the PGA460, MSP430 and TDC1000, will be shown and discussed from a system level perspective with the help of reference designs.
