5.7 How to remove wires and optimize system cost by transmitting RS-485 communications over a power bus

Traditionally, the power line and data line are carried separately in industrial applications. However if data could be transmitted over power lines, the total wires for communication would be reduced from four to two. This reduction is now possible with the THVD8000. This RS-485 transceiver features on-off keying (OOK) modulation, enabling power-line communications and reducing the number of wires by 50%. This presentation will discuss the key points of implementing power-line communication, addressing critical design challenges such as carrier frequency choice, inductor/capacitor selection, signal integrity, and noise immunity.
