Overview of Software Defined Radio on Jacinto 6 Devices

This training describes the basic functions, as well as technical challenges, of terrestrial radio reception in a vehicle.

TI’s “Jacinto 6” family of infotainment processors provides “out of box” support for the primary digital radio standards in U.S. (HD Radio™) and in Europe (“Digital Audio Broadcasting”, or DAB).

Jacinto uses a “Software Defined Receiver” (SDR) approach to implement a world-wide radio solution, even capable of feature upgrades without hardware changes.

Jacinto SDR provides a large set of radio-processing features, including seamless blending between digital radio and analog radio.
It also offers the flexibility to use tuner front ends from most major tuner suppliers.

Two typical configurations are described: two tuners for main audio & background scanning, or adding a third tuner to extend radio quality/range, using “Maximal Ratio Combining” (MRC).

TI’s powerful C66x DSP on Jacinto 6 can also be used for audio post-processing of the decoded audio.
