3.3 State Space Control Seminar: Session 3
A 1-day course in control theory based on the spate space modelling paradigm. This course is often taught in conjunction with the Control Theory Fundamentals seminar, forming a comprehensive 2-day course in control theory. Section numbering therefore runs from 5 to 8.
Session 1 (Part 5). State Space Models - Co-ordinate transformations, state space, eigenvalues & eigenvectors
Session 2 (Part 6). Properties of Linear Systems - Stability, phase portraits, controllability & observability, modal decomposition
Session 3 (Part 7). State Feedback Control - State feedback, pole placement, eigenstructure assignment, integral control
Session 4 (Part 8). Linear State Estimators - Linear state estimation, current estimators, reduced order estimators, separation principle
The seminar comprises four sections based on the state space modelling paradigm. After two sections on modelling in state space, several methods of state feedback controller design are explained. The seminar concludes with a section on the design of linear state estimators.
The seminar requires some familiarity with matrix algebra. Students unfamiliar with this topic are advised to read through the summary document available on the downloads page.
The material is supported by many examples and tutorials, and includes a short question & answer session at the end of each section. Matlab is used throughout the seminar to introduce new concepts and to illustrate each major topic. A printed copy of the seminar manual containing the presentation material is issued to each attendee at the start of the course.
