A common grid tied inverter must be able to measure the grid voltage and frequency, the DC input voltage, and the current through the output inductors; all in order to calculate the PWM drive parameters on the fly. Any mistake in these control loops can cause some pretty serious disturbance on the grid, especially with more and more distributed generation coming online.
