While there are many devices on the market for transient voltage protection, traditionally the most successful protection against surge events have been TVS diodes. Recently TI has developed a unique Precision Surge technology that offers significant improvements over existing TVS diodes. These new devices provide superior voltage suppression performance in the form of flat clamping vs applied current, which lowers the voltage that the system is exposed to by 20% compared to traditional TVS diodes. TVS3300, the first in the Precision Surge family, is a unidirectional passive device with a 33V working voltage designed specifically to protect mid-voltage rails in the industrial, communication, and process automation sector, particularly in sensor and PLC applications.
A key advantage of the Precision Surge technology over existing diodes is the ‘flat clamping’ technology. By improving voltage limiting performance during a surge event, the technology allows customers to require a lower maximum voltage rating on other components, enabling cost savings and increasing system-wide flexibility. The Precision Surge technology also offers a huge improvement over traditional surge suppression solutions by offering an improved compact footprint. The Precision Surge technology is available in ultra-small WCSP (1.3mm2) and QFN (4mm2) packages, reducing footprint size by up to 90% compared to industry standard devices. For many space-constrained applications, this offers the Precision Surge family a valuable advantage.
During the presentation, we will discuss the advantages of this technology further as well as go into detail about the system-level design decisions that are made while working with surge suppression devices. We will also discuss how to recognize applications that have a need for surge protection, helping to best provide surge suppression guidance to customers.
